Pasco superintendent reveals more reorganization plans

18

December

Pasco schools superintendent Kurt Browning unveiled the big picture behind many of his new job descriptions on Tuesday, presenting his proposed organizational chart to the School Board for its initial review.

Among the major changes, he would:

  • Merge the special education and student services departments
  • Eliminate the instructional media services department, placing functions in curriculum, information services or communications
  • Add a parent involvement and engagement division to the communications department
  • Rename the curriculum and instruction department as Office for Teaching and Learning, to stress that the department works for the schools

Browning said he wants to refocus the entire district office to support instruction at the schools. "There is a huge divide between the district office and our school based sites. So what are we going to do? ... We need to bridge that gap," he said. "Organizational charts usually look like a pyramid … with the superintendent at the top. … In my organization that chart is turned upside down."

He told the board that the driving goal is to improve student performance, and the district has a long way to go. This new organization is a way to reposition the administration for that endeavor, Browning said.
