Pasco superintendent write-in candidate in it for the short haul

Former Pasco County commissioner Ed Collins single-handedly closed the Pasco superintendent's primary election to Republicans only when he filed as a write-in candidate for the job in June.

He doesn't plan to stick around as a candidate for the general election, though.

Once the primary is over, Collins told the Gradebook, "I'll withdraw my name as a write-in candidate."

Collins repeated that he decided to put his name on the ballot, however temporarily, because he does not believe that Democrats should be able to select the Republicans' candidate without putting in a candidate of their own. He said he did not act on behalf of either incumbent superintendent Heather Fiorentino or challenger Kurt Browning, the former secretary of state.

"I've got a good relationship with both of them," Collins said. "I wish them both luck. ... I think it's just going to be a dogfight."

The primary election is on Aug. 14. Moon Lake handyman Ken Benson also is in the GOP primary.
