Pasco's "cone of shame" teacher story goes viral

No surprises here. Put the phrases "cone of shame" and "dog collar" alongside "teacher" and "student discipline," and you've got a story that's going places.

The news that Pasco science teacher Laurie Bailey-Cutkomp faces firing for having students wear a collar that vets use to keep wounded animals from licking themselves so far has made MSNBC, CNN and Fox News. An Associated Press version of the story has hit newspapers and websites all over the country.

As the school district deals with the attention, it's also now girding itself for the Bubba Army. Bubba the Love Sponge Clem today urged his followers on his show and Twitter feed to "support Laurie Bailey-Cutkomp the Zephyrhills high school teacher who put a dog collar on a student for bad behavior." He gave out the address for the district office in Land O'Lakes. So far, officials say no one has shown up. But the day is young.

Meanwhile, some in the district say they're just waiting for what they figure is the inevitable — Stephen Colbert's crew knocking on their door. They showed up when substitute teacher Jim Piculas said he was fired for wizardry, after all.
