Paving the way for Tony Bennett to become Florida education commissioner?

13

November

There's been much talk about getting Tony Bennett to consider taking Florida's commissioner job since he lost his bid for another term as Indiana superintendent of public instruction.

The only other name that keeps popping up belongs to Pam Stewart, the state's current interim commissioner.

On Tuesday, Stewart -- who hasn't applied for the permanent job -- gave a positive though inconclusive nod to Bennett while visiting a Miami-Dade school.

“I don’t know him real well, except for our work together on PARCC and some other initiatives,” Stewart told the Miami Herald. “He’s very focused, very driven and I think that serves, or has served, the state of Indiana very well. I think his skills are certainly transferrable and we’ll see what happens.”

The deadline for applications is Nov. 30. The State Board of Education is scheduled to interview candidates on Dec. 11 in Tampa.
