PCTA to district: Early release Wednesdays help teachers

Pinellas teachers union president Kim Black offered a written response Tuesday to recent comments from interim Superintendent John Stewart that early release Wednesdays are "not serving the purpose they were originally intended." In a letter to Stewart and school board members (attached below), Black referenced a PCTA survey, conducted after the first year of implementation, that found 59 percent of respondents wanted the model to continue (a number she suggested would be even higher now). She also wrote:

Some called the change “disruptive” at first. Due to a lack of communication on this issue with the community, it caught some parents off-guard. Some schools struggled to design a creative schedule around the new requirements. However, once principals, teachers, staff and parents began sharing positive ways-of-work and proactive scheduling with the schools who were struggling, a large majority of the instructional staff have found this to be a successful solution to a myriad of challenges.
