Petition objects to proposed changes at Gibbs

3

November

It's unclear how much support there is behind it, but a petition drive is underway at Gibbs High to get the Pinellas County School Board to reconsider interim Superintendent John Stewart's recommendation for new leadership at the school.

Stewart is recommending that Tyrone Middle School principal Stephanie Adkinson replace Kevin Gordon as principal, while Gibbs assistant principal Robin Mobley become the acting principal at Tyrone. Those recommendations go before the board on Tuesday.

The petition asks the board to hold off:

"We, the undersigned, are concerned Gibbs High teachers and staff who urge Dr. Stewart and the board to act now and reconsider the appointment of Stephanie Adkinson at this time. We ask that that her appointment as principal is postponed until the end of the year (if at all) and that Robin Mobley be appointed as Gibbs acting (or permanent) principal for the remainder of the year (or longer). If the Board’s decision is to appoint Stephanie Adkinson as principal of Gibbs and Robin Mobley as principal of Tyrone Middle, we are simply asking for that appointment to occur after the end of the 2011/2012 school year."

Those backing the petition say they're distressed about Mobley leaving. One email that is circulating says, "Ms. Mobley serves as our APC and is basically in charge when Dr. Gordon is not here. We just can't afford to lose her during this pivotal time." Another says she has been "instrumental in the turn-around" and "is the most knowledgeable person on staff in terms of curriculum requirements and state mandates for Gibbs."

Teachers and staff are being asked to sign the petition by day's end tomorrow.
