In Pinellas, charter school applications coming in bunches



Pinellas is looking like fertile ground for charter schools. The district received a record 16 applications for new charter schools by this month's deadline, including some familiar names and players and many new ones.

According to Dot Clark, who oversees the district's charter schools, there's a Rudolf Dreikurs Academy that's similar to the Alfred Adler charter school in St. Petersburg.  A Pinellas Primary Academy that's associated with the Pinellas Preparatory Academy in Largo. Two more Plato Academies. A Global Outreach Charter with a Russian theme. A MYcroSchool aimed at struggling high school students. And on and on.

We're not sure what all of them are yet, but district staff will be reviewing all the applications in the next two months or so before recommending whether the school board should approve or deny. (The big step after that is whether the board approves or denies the actual charter.) So, more details are coming.

The district currently has 13 charter schools. Here's the list of newly proposed ones and the grade levels they plan to serve:

3. A.C.E. (Academics, Character, and Excellence) K-5

7. Pinellas Academy of Excellence K-8
8. Pinellas Academy of Math and Science K-8
9. Somerset Academy Pinellas K-8
10. Harvard Park Charter K-8
11. Plato Academy (K-8) North K-8
12. Plato Academy (K-8) South K-8
13. Classical Charter School K-8
14. Richard Milburn Academy 9-12
15. Newpoint Prep High School 9-12
16. MYcroSchool Pinellas 9-12
