Pinellas schools implement hiring freeze

20

March

Pinellas County's principals have been instructed not to hire any new teachers or other staff from now until the end of the 2011-12 school year.

Ron Ciranna, assistant superintendent for Human Resources, said such a freeze is implemented annually around this time in order to help the district gear up for hiring for the coming school year. "It's kind of like taking inventory," he said.

An internal newsletter sent to school board members on Friday gives these details: "Included in the freeze, which is effective immediately, are all instructional staff positions regardless of funding sources; support service positions other than those deemed critical to the safety of schools and effective and efficient operation of a school or site; professional staff; and district level office staff," the newsletter says.
