Please stand for the Pledge .. but if you don't, that's OK too

United-states-flag Marion superintendent Jim Yancey is backing away from his plan to require students to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance just days after he announced his intention to add it to the student code of conduct.

The Ocala Star-Banner reports:

"No matter how they word the 2009-10 student code of conduct, School District officials say they will always ask, not require, students to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and national anthem."

Constitutional lawyers, it seems, have advised the district that it could be sued if it forces the issue. Courts have ruled that schools cannot mandate standing for the Pledge.

The Marion School Board is set to make its final decision in late May.
