Police: Hernando sub hit student

SPRING HILL -- Substitute teacher Chandra Christine Bennington may have just failed the classroom management portion of her teacher certification bid.

She's facing misdemeanor battery charges, after Hernando County Sheriff's Office deputies say she slapped a 12-year-old student hard on the face during a March 13 class at Explorer K-8.

Five student witnesses told police they saw Bennington scream at the boy and slap him, after he pestered her to let him speak to a friend outside class. Hernando Schools officials say she was working toward her certification to become a teacher, but has now permanently lost her right to work there.

Bennington admitted to slapping the student and said she was wrong to do so, according to the police report. She said things began to fall apart after she assigned her fifth period class to "compare and contrast two women from history, after reading two stories that were both two pages long."

"He didn't start on his work until halfway through class, since he was constantly talking," she said of the boy. "I made it a point to tell him that he needed to get his work done."
