Poll of Thurgood parents: No change

13_hour_school_clock.An effort by Thurgood Marshall Fundamental Middle School to get its start times back in place appears to have hit a snag. Even though an overwhelming majority of parents favor sacrificing a bus to keep its start time, a call-in poll didn't show the bump in popularity the principal was hoping for.

After the School Board voted to change the school's start time by two hours in a cost-cutting move (from 7:20-2:05 p.m to 9:30-4:15), parents have been furious, and School Board member Terry Krassner said she will bring up the issue at the June 14 meeting.

Last week, the school said it was considering its own plan by using the district's Decentralized Decision-Making process. The school itself could petition the School Board to end its busing and work on a plan to provide carpooling and public busing options to parents who need it. Principal Dallas Jackson quickly rounded up a meeting of parents and said he wanted to get 80 to 90 percent of the parents on board to present his case to the School Board.

A phone poll was taken Monday night, and the results are on the school's website, showing little variation from earlier surveys.

The results: The survey taken June 2 had 382 responses, with 71.2 percent voting to keep the current start time and stop busing, and 28.8 percent voting to keep the bus. The phone poll June 6 had 469 responses with 72.9 voting to keep the start time and stop busing; 27.1 percent voted to keep the bus.

The poll results were posted on the school's web site with the headline: "Important News: Start Times Finalized"
