Portables, portables, portables

October

portable.

Clarification, Sunday, 12:42 p.m.: As many readers have already noted, the district list of portables at elementary schools, attached below, did not include all elementary schools with portables. It only included those the district is considering for rezoning. The district sent me that clarification Saturday, but I did not see the message until this morning.

One of the undercurrents in the rezoning efforts in Pinellas is the proliferation of portables on overcrowded campuses. We frankly don’t know how much they cost, or what the potential savings might be if elementary schools are “right sized.” But we have heard complaints about portables not being ideal for teaching and learning.

We asked the district to provide us with a list that shows the number of portables at each elementary school, and we attached what we got below.

If we added things up right, it looks like there are 140 portables on 22 campuses, not counting the ones at Lynch Elementary, which are due to construction on campus. Take a look and tell us what you think. Are portables that bad?

(The image is from mobilemodularrents.com. As far as we know, it is NOT of an actual portable in Pinellas.)
