Putting his stamp on education: Gov.-elect Scott faces two State Board vacancies

3

November

images.jpgFlorida governor-elect Rick Scott has strong opinions about education -- he supports eliminating teacher tenure and expanding school choice options, among his priorities. And soon, he will get the chance to begin putting people on the Florida Board of Education who see things his way.

The terms of two current board members, chairman T. Willard Fair of Miami and Dr. Akshay Desai of St. Petersburg, will expire on Dec. 31. Gov. Charlie Crist could replace them before he leaves office, but his spokesman says that isn't expected.

"We currently do not have any applications for those upcoming vacancies. The Governor will most likely not be making the SBOE appointments before he leaves office," Sterling Ivey tells the Gradebook.

Fair is a holdover from the Jeb Bush era in his second term, and he can't return to the board. Desai is a Crist appointee who could serve another four years. Haven't heard yet who might be in line to serve on this board, which sets statewide education policies and rules. Stay tuned.
