The Pinellas school district's annual climate survey - which gives thousands of employees a chance to tell the district what they think of their principals, their superintendent, their school board, etc. - appears to be up in the air. Again.

Superintendent Julie Janssen told board members at last week's workshop that there wouldn't be a survey this year. But at least a couple of board members objected, and member Janet Clark said she'll be asking for more discussion at the next workshop. "I don't think we were happy with the arbitrary decision" to scrap the survey, Clark told The Gradebook. "I see it (the climate survey) as a voice for the teachers."

District officials spiked the climate survey last year, but reversed course a week later after the Gradebook wrote about it and at least a couple of board members weighed in.

Like Clark, board member Linda Lerner said the district needed to do the survey this year. While not perfect, "the climate survey is okay the way it is now" and still worth doing, she said.

"Unfortunately, there wasn't closure on it" at the workshop, she said.

We asked the district yesterday afternoon if there was going to be a climate survey this year. We'll let you know if and when we get a response.

"My feeling is, it will be done," Clark said. "We'd be sending a bad message to teachers, in this year of all years, if we decided not to send them a survey."

Update at 11:51 a.m. Friday: We just got the following response from district spokeswoman Andrea Zahn: "I can confirm that the superintendent told the board there would be no climate survey. We have not heard anything different than that."
