Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Race to the Top could bring Florida $350-$700 million

That's according to final guidelines, released yesterday by the U.S. Department of Education. The "notice inviting applications" says on Page 30 that the USDOE developed "nonbinding budget ranges" to help states shape their proposals. Florida, California, New York and Texas are in Category I, which means they should shoot for programs in the $350-$700 million range, although the guidelines also say "states may prepare budgets that are above or below the ranges specified."

Applications are due by Jan. 19. Winners will be announced next spring.

More on changes to the guidelines in this New York Times story.
