Race to the Top finalists announcement coming
In the first round, Florida finished just out of the money in the Obama Administration's $4.3 billion Race to the Top.
Since then, Gov. Crist has rejected the Legislature's attempt to adopt a new teacher accountability model that teachers abhorred (SB 6) but the US Department of Education seemed to want. A select committee then put together a new RTTT memorandum of understanding that garnered much more teacher union support than the first one (54 of 67, compared to 5), boosting the stakeholder buy-in the USDOE also appeared to require.
The Florida Board of Education, meanwhile, stands poised to adopt the Common Core national math and English standards tomorrow, also a requirement for Race to the Top.
Is all this good enough? Find out tomorrow when US Education Secretary Arne Duncan announces the finalists for the funds. His speech is slated for 1 p.m. in Washington D.C. The actual winners, natch, won't be named until at least September.
