Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

The reaction from Senate Bill 6 supporters

From Senate President Jeff Atwater: “I am disappointed that today Governor Crist chose to reverse direction and veto SB 6, a bold education reform to reward Florida’s quality teachers and ensure Florida’s children are receiving the quality education they deserve. Quality teachers are the unsung heroes of the classroom and should be richly compensated for the learning gains they instill in Florida’s children ...
From Newt Gingrich: “It is very disappointing that Governor Crist abandoned the children of Florida and sided with the teachers union. Florida had a real chance to reform education on behalf of children. The governor had months to improve the bill before final passage. It is sad to see the public interest abandoned for a political calculation with a powerful union.”

From House Majority Leader Adam Hasner: “I'm disappointed that after sending his top policy staffer to the House Committee to testify in support of the proposal, Governor Crist would change his mind and now veto the bill.”

From Barney Bishop, president and CEO of Associated Industries of Florida: “Governor Crist’s decision to veto SB 6 is not only a disappointment to Associated Industries of Florida and the businesses we represent, but also demonstrates the governor is not a champion of true reform ... There are many who may feel they’ve won a battle today, but ultimately, we all lost. The teachers who are the bedrock of our public education system will continue to be locked into incremental pay raises based more on the length of time they sit in their chairs versus the outputs they are achieving in the form of student learning gains.”

From Rep. John Tobia, R-Satellite Beach, who pulled his support of Crist in the U.S. Senate race: "Governor Crist is playing political games with our children's education," Tobia told The Buzz.
