3

November

In light of recent budget cuts and policy changes in education, this new report pours gasoline on a fire. Released this week by the Heritage Foundation, it concludes that the typical public school teacher makes as much in salary as private-sector employees with similar skill levels, but more than 50 percent more if fringe benefits are considered.

The report drew this response from the American Federation of Teachers and this response from Michelle Rhee. Coverage in Time here. (By coincidence, the photo that accompanies that piece, taken by a St. Petersburg Times photographer, is of a teacher at Shore Acres Elementary.)
