Research on black students, black teachers
The recent St. Petersburg Times story about the Pinellas school district’s plans to beef up recruitment of black teachers mentioned several studies that examined whether black students perform better with black teachers. Here’s the one based on data in North Carolina. Here’s the one that looked at the performance of community college students. And here (again) is the 2006 study that researcher David Figlio did for Pinellas when it was the defendant in a lawsuit involving black student achievement.
No doubt, there’s a lot more research on this topic. By all means, tell us what other studies you think are worth considering (if any) and why they matter (if they do). The Pinellas school board is slated to discuss this issue at a Jan. 17 workshop; it could vote the following week on a new legal agreement regarding it.
