Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Same as it ever was - for now

Last year around this time, Pinellas County had a HUGE debate over what time buses should run and school should start. This year, not so much. Yet the result was the same.

Pinellas schools will follow the same opening and closing times with which families have become familiar - for at least one more year. That means 7:05 a.m. start times for high schools, 9:45 a.m. for most middle schools, and between 7:45 and 8:55 a.m. for elementary schools.

Pinellas School Board members approved the start times Tuesday morning, giving the transportation department to continue its efforts to improve routing and scheduling.

While they were meeting, the board also OK'd a plan to allow high school students who are admitted to college half way through their senior year to participate in school sponsored athletics and other activities for the rest of the year. Those students will get to walk with their class in their high school's graduation ceremony, too. It's like high school and college all wrapped into one. Cool.
