Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Scholarship walk is planned Saturday in Tampa

The Hillsborough Education Foundation will host a 5K scholarship walk this Saturday at the Tampa Bay Times Forum downtown. Registration opens at 8 a.m., with the walk starting at 9 a.m.

The walk is one of 13 taking place on Saturday throughout Florida. The foundation hopes to raise more than $250,000 to establish scholarship funds for students in middle and high schools.

“By walking with us, we can change the lives of students,” said foundation president Phil Jones said. “It will also encourage our younger students to think about how a college education could alter the course and potential of their lives ahead.”

School teams are competing for bonus scholarship funds of $1,000 to $5,000. Eight walkers will receive $250 scholarships, and the student who raises the most money will be given an iPad. Entertainment will be provided by Durant High graduate Jeremy Rosado, who was finalist “American Idol.”

Anyone interested in walking can register online to and click on the "Hillsborough" link.
