School Board? Or mosquito control?

mosquito.jpgOnce again, Florida Sen. Steve Wise is aiming to cut the pay of the state's school board members. The money, Wise said, should go to the students.

Like the idea or not, you've got to wonder about it as Wise seems to target school boards only. If approved, the change would leave the policy makers for some of the nation's largest school districts -- many of which run multibillion-dollar budgets -- earning less than a member of the Pasco County Mosquito Control Commission.

His proposal, which comes up in committee this afternoon, has led to some board members to float some other ideas, not the least of which is slashing lawmakers' salaries to a small stipend too. One board member suggested that since lawmakers only work a few weeks a year, and they want to control school district policy anyway, maybe they ought to just eliminate school boards and merge the job with the part-time Legislature.

If that's not enough controversy for you, the Senate Pre-K-12 Committee also will take up a perennial bill that would allow prayer at secondary school events. Regularly besieged with constitutional concerns, measures like this have gained no traction in past sessions. This year it's filed by a Democrat. Stay tuned.
