School districts still wait on hurricane makeup days

September

The threat of Tropical Storm Isaac led Tampa area school districts to close for a day in late August.

Already they're getting calls from parents wanting to know whether their kids will have to make up the day and, if so, when. That's particularly important for Pasco families that are planning trips for Thanksgiving week, when the hurricane date has been scheduled.

Pasco superintendent Heather Fiorentino said her staff is reviewing school schedules to see if the district can get by without holding a makeup day. It all depends on how the schools have set up their class periods. She figured an answer would come soon.

Pinellas officials, meanwhile, said they are waiting to see if the state Department of Education will waive the minimum contact hours requirement, as it did the last time the area shut down for a storm.

And Hillsborough schools don't have any worries, as their student calendar is 181 days long instead of the more common 180. That means Hillsborough simply writes off the day and moves on.

Stay tuned.
