School grades are coming out Wednesday
School grades are coming out Wednesday for elementary, middle and combination schools, the state Department of Education announced today.
Grades are expected to drop this year because of changes made to increase the rigor and the passing bar for the FCAT. The state also changed how it calculates school grades, including students with disabilities and students learning English. Neighborhood schools also will be accountable for students in alternative schools, including those in special education centers. See a Miami Herald story about the changes here. See the department's explanation here and a guidesheet for 2012 grades here.
If you really want to know all the details behind the grading calculation, the state's technical paper from June is here.
Changes to the grade calculation were made to comply with both state law and a waiver for the federal No Child Left Behind law.
To mitigate the effect on schools, the state Board of Education did agree that, for this year, school grades could only fall one letter grade.
