School "inspirational message" bill heads to Gov. Rick Scott

1

March

After years of failure based on constitutional concerns, a bill permitting Florida public school children to offer inspirational messages, which some consider a euphemism for prayer, in schools and at school sponsored events has passed both houses of the Florida Legislature.

SB 98 passed the Florida House 88-27 at noon Thursday, after having passed the Senate earlier in session on a 31-8 vote.

The bill now heads to Gov. Rick Scott, who told the Times earlier today: "I believe that individuals ought to be able to have the right to pray in schools."

Democrats, along with several religious rights and civil rights organizations, have said they expect the rule to be challenged in court and possibly ruled unconstitutional. Story here.
