School's out. Are you really at the fair?
If Hillsborough County students think they are getting a scam with today's day off school to attend the Florida State Fair, they're going to make out like bandits next year. In Feb. 2008, they'll have two days off during fair season.
Here's the deal: Originally, the committee creating next year's calendar planned to combine the traditional Fair Day break with Presidents Day - and get rid of the county's screwy system of giving west Hillsborough a day off to attend the fair, and select east Hillsborough schools a day off for Florida Strawberry Festival in Plant City. But the Fair Authority wasn't impressed. In a letter, they told the school district exactly what day to take off for the fair - for every year until 2011. The calendar committee narrowly conceded in a 7-5 vote. (They also asked that the entire county got the day off, but that didn't go anywhere.)
If the School Board approves, the plan is to give most of the county a day off for the Fair on Feb. 8 and then another day off on Presidents Day on Feb. 18. East Hillsborough will stick with the Strawberry Festival on March 3. And the district is going to look at redefining what schools are considered east and west. Either way, sounds like a lot of days off. Anyone worried about momentum before FCAT testing?
