Search firm to Florida Board of Education: Extend the deadline

UPDATE: The State Board of Education has called an emergency conference call meeting for 6 p.m. today to consider extending the application deadline as proposed.

Ray and Associates, the search firm hired to help find a new Florida education commissioner, has recommended that the state Board of Education extend its application deadline. Its suggestion comes two days after the deadline passed, with 19 applications in hand.

"In order to meet the expectation of the Board for us to provide the best possible candidates from a very select pool of elite potential candidates we strongly believe that it would be in the best interest of all parties to extend the application period until Monday, June 6, 2011 at 12:00 midnight CST," principals Gary Ray and William Adams wrote to the board.

"Due to the prevailing holiday weekend in fairness to the applicants who have applied and to some potential candidates we have been in dialog with, this extension would allow for the vetting of all current applicants and for the completion of recruitment conversations with additional highly qualified candidates.  It would also address major travel issues in scheduling candidates for June 1, 2011 interviews."

Is that just a nice way of saying "we can do better"?

The list of candidates so far includes former Florida education commissioner Tom Gallagher, Florida chancellor of career education Loretta Costin, former U.S. Education assistant secretary Williamson Evers and former Hernando County schools superintendent Wayne Alexander

We provided a partial list on Thursday evening. Here are the additional names provided this afternoon:

  • Oleh Bula, an Sarasota charter school principal
  • Edward Hashey Jr., Manatee County school teacher
  • Maria Goodloe-Johnson, former Seattle schools superintendent (dismissed in a financial scandal in March)
  • Ellen Ryan, Nassau County school principal
  • Scott Whittle, Leon County school teacher
