Searching in public

Whatsupthere_w480 Based in Wisconsin, the headhunter running Florida's education commissioner search doesn't often deal with open records laws as liberal as the Sunshine Law. Proact Search, in fact, has quite the reputation for secrecy. In the spirit (not to mention the letter) of openness, though, the firm has launched a web site where anyone with a computer can keep tabs on everything it's doing to find the next DOE leader. You can access all the applications - none so far, though more than 500 recruiting letters went to possible candidates last week - as well as reports to the State Board, job description and applicant questionnaires. The site supplements the state's own web page, which includes DOE-generated documents and reports on the search. The State Board is scheduled to discuss the search at its next meeting, on Tuesday in Miami. Applications are due July 13, with the hire expected to start in the fall.
