Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Secretary Duncan again praises Florida's education reform efforts

In past statements, US education secretary Arne Duncan has lauded Florida's education data system as one of the nation's models.

This week, he pointed to the Sunshine State as one of the leaders in the effort to measure the effectiveness of teacher preparation programs by tracking teacher success in the classroom. In a speech to state lawmakers in California, the secretary mentioned Florida, Louisiana, Texas and Colorado as being in front on this initiative, and urged other state legislatures to follow their lead, according to a department news release.

"Education is very much a state and local responsibility," Duncan said. "And the truth is that state lawmakers must play a vital role in improving our schools, quite apart from any federal initiatives and incentives."
