Sen. Wise joins effort to scale back class-size amendment
On Tuesday, Rep. Will Weatherford filed legislation that would have lawmakers ask voters to scale back the class-size amendment.
The House can't unilaterally put an item on the ballot, though. So now it's in the Senate, too.
Sen. Steve Wise, R-Jacksonville, (shown) filed a near identical version of the resolution this morning, adding just two words to the text. He met with leaders of several education groups to discuss the measure and seek their backing.
"Everybody was supportive of it, all of the organizations with the exception of the teachers' union," Wise told the Gradebook. "Our job is to get them on board."
Is that likely. Perhaps not. FEA spokesman Mark Pudlow recently told the Gradebook of the amendment, "We are still fully behind making sure that it is fully funded."
