Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

So you want to be commissioner

20

February

You need a bachelor's degree (advanced degree preferred but not required). You must be strongly committed to a "student-first" philosophy. You must have successfully led a large organization "dedicated to ambitious goals." And you must have a proven record of implementing programs to reduce the achievement gap.

The State Board of Education unanimously approved a job description for Florida's top education boss this morning. Though the qualifications seem to lean toward an educator, probably one already in Florida (see "understands and appreciates Florida's institutions, culture and political and educational leadership"), there's still room for an unknown to jump in.

The board next plans to seek a search firm to collect and vet applications. The list could be long. The pay range, after all, is $195,416 to $275,058.
