Speaker Weatherford applauds commissioner choice, stands by agenda

Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford has heard the criticisms in the aftermath of Tony Bennett's selection as the state's next education commissioner, and they aren't bothering him a bit.

He gleefully responded on Twitter to Times columnist John Romano's column proclaiming that Bennett's choice reflects a doubling down on the "same old policies" with an emphatic "Yes we are!"

"Tony Bennett is a great choice to be Florida's next commissioner of education," Weatherford told the Gradebook. "Tony believes in the principles of student-centered education reform and had an outstanding record of success as Indiana's state superintendent of schools.  His selection couldn't come at a better time as our state begins adopting Common Core academic standards and remains focused on improving graduation rates.  I look forward to working with him."
