State Rep. Ahern to Scott: Veto Poly bill
Ahern, R-St. Petersburg, called the bill "a hasty attempt at pleasing special interests without consideration for the students attending USF Polytechnic." He asked Scott in a letter to "uphold the principles of limited government and sound fiscal policy" when making his decision about whether to sign or veto the bill.
Pushed by Senate Budget chairman JD Alexander, the bill short-cuts a plan to split off USF's branch campus in Lakeland into the 12th state university that was already agreed upon by state higher education leaders. Instead, SB 1994 would create the independent university right away -- without students, accreditation or buildings on its campus.
Scott says he still hasn't made up his mind. He has until Saturday to do so.
