Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

State school improvement chief heads to Miami-Dade

Vitti.jpgNikolai Vitti, for the past two years the Florida Department of Education's point person on school improvement, is headed to a key spot with the Miami-Dade School Board.

Miami-Dade superintendent Alberto Carvalho created a new cabinet-level position focusing on fixing the district's persistently low-performing schools. Carvalho appointed Vitti to the job, which carries the title of assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. A Miami-Dade press release indicates that Vitti will come with "key staff" from the DOE.

No word on who will replace Vitti at the department.

See our 2009 interview with Vitti for more on his views.
