Still no details on review of black student achievement gap

It's still not clear where the Pinellas school district is headed on a plan to explore why black students in Pinellas are falling further behind black students in other big Florida districts.

After twice postponing the hiring of Northwestern University education researcher David Figlio, Superintendent Julie Janssen said on May 11 that the plan may be bigger than the initial suggestion to hire Figlio. She said more details would be forthcoming in a couple weeks.

District spokeswoman Andrea Zahn told The Gradebook last week that Janssen is still working on it.

Janssen's comments came a few days after members of the Concerned Organizations for the Quality Education of Black Students (COQEBS) expressed reservations about Figlio's hiring.

Figlio told The Gradebook via email last week that he's been working with the district to get the data he needs, and said the district has been very responsive. He said he and the district have been waiting on funding to figure out exactly what the contract will look like, "but we have agreed in principle."
