Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

They can walk

LAND O'LAKES - Pasco county high school seniors who have met all their graduation requirements except for passing the FCAT test will be allowed to walk at commencement later this month. Just a day before this year's twelfth-grade FCAT results come out, the Pasco School Board has changed its rules for taking part in the annual ceremony. The county had been one of just a handful in Florida that had barred kids from walking if they didn't have all the graduation requirements completed. "I set strong boundaries with my kids, but in some cases we need to look at the big picture," said vice chairwoman Kathryn Starkey. That big picture is encouraging as many students to complete their education as possible, she said. Only board member Allen Altman opposed the change, saying students should pass the test as required. Member Cathi Martin was absent.
