Thomas Gonzalez resigns as Hillsborough school board lawyer

thomas_gonzalez.It's time for the Hillsborough County School Board to get a new lawyer.

Thomas Gonzalez, who represents both the board and the district, submitted his resignation as board attorney two weeks ago.

"I just think it's time to start talking about a transition," Gonzalez, 62, said Friday.

Gonzalez, a specialist in labor law, worked as outside council for the district from 1975 until his predecessor, Crosby Few, retired in 2004. Then-superintendent Earl Lennard recommended Gonzalez as Few's replacement, and the board hired him with little discussion. Few died in 2010 at age 77.

Gonzalez said he is not retiring and will continue to handle litigation for the district.

Nonetheless, school board chairwoman Candy Olson said, "he will be very hard to replace," because of his expertise and his ties to the community.
