UF calls on supporters to lobby lawmakers on its behalf

Gator_head It's no secret that Florida's university system faces tough financial times. University of Florida president Bernie Machen wants to make sure that lawmakers know just how much UF means to Floridians as the Legislature considers whether to cut its budget, though.

In an e-mail addressed to the Gator Nation, Machen this week urged alumni and other friends of the university to reach out to lawmakers and tell them:

"We need advocates to help us tell the story of the University of Florida and how it benefits our state. The more we can communicate with our elected officials about UF's education, research and public service, the better informed they will be during this budget cutting time."

Not sure what to say? The university has set up a nifty Web site -- Gators for Higher Ed -- that offers talking points on its legislative agenda. It's filled with information about tuition, budgets, matching gifts, construction funds and more.

"The legislative session runs from March 3 until May 1," Machen advises, "so time is of the essence."
