Union endorsements lead to thousands for Pasco School Board candidates

The three candidates for Pasco County School Board who won the endorsement of the local teachers union all were quick to get the word out to the media and the public.

The support led to extra financial backing that will help them spread that word.

Just days after getting the United Employees of Pasco's nod, Cynthia Armstrong, Alison Crumbley and Steve Luikart all began receiving checks from organized labor groups across Florida. The candidates each pulled in more than $2,100 from teachers unions including those in Hillsborough, Palm Beach, Broward, Martin and Santa Rosa counties.

At least one of the non-endorsed -- Mark Swartsel in District 5 -- has sought to make an issue of union support, suggesting his opponent might be too closely aligned with the union position even when it runs contrary to "mainstream thinking." Luikart has rejected such accusations as silly.
