University system students to descend on Capitol this week

Hopefully they've been excused from their classes...

Hundreds of students from Florida's public universities plan to gather at the State Capitol on Thursday afternoon, hoping to raise awareness of key issues coming up this legislative session.

The annual "Rally in Tally," is organized by the Florida Student Association. The group's chairman, Michael Long will deliver a student perspective on Gov. Rick Scott's budget recommendations -- which doesn't include additional budget cuts for higher ed, in addition to no tuition increases.

Long will also talk about the association's opposition a recently filed bill that would change the way students are selected for membership on the Board of Governors, the overseeing body of the state university system. As FSA chairman, Long is the current student member on that board.

The students have invited Gov. Scott, Speaker-Designate Will Weatherford, Speaker Dean Cannon, and Senate President Mike Haridopolis.
