U.S. Rep Kathy Castor calls for federal review of FCAT

1

August

U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, plans to ask the U.S. Department of Education to review the "flaws and failures" of the FCAT.

Castor announced today in a media call that she plans to send a letter to U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan requesting the independent review. She said she's heard a "great deal of frustration" from parents and teachers about the "serious failures" of the state's accountability system in the last few months.

"I think this is particularly important following the resignation of Florida's education commissioner, Gerard Robinson," she said of the review.

Also on the call today were Joie Cadle, president of the Florida School Boards Association, and Christine Bramuchi, of Fund Education Now. Castor said she thought the recent anti-testing resolution from the FSBA deserved more attention than it's received.
