USF ROTC program earns top honors

The University of South Florida Army ROTC program has received the MacArthur Award in recognition of the battalion’s performance in 2008.

According to a USF news release, the USF Army ROTC battalion was one of only eight programs among 273 nationwide to earn the award, placing it in the top 3 percent of all U.S. Army ROTC programs and first in the 6th Brigade.

Only battalions that exceed commissioning goals for the year are eligible for the award. In 2008, USF produced 27 commissioned officers and two nurses, well over the requirement of 18 officers and one nurse.

Lt. Col. Jim Botters, military science professor at USF, credited the support the battalion received from USF and the Joint Military Leadership Center as well as six partnership schools in the Tampa Bay area.
