Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Wanted: Middle school authors

TAMPA -- With school districts in both Hillsborough and Pinellas counties closed for the entire Thanksgiving week, and other districts preparing for a super-long weekend, parents may already be running out of ideas to keep the kids busy and away from the television.

With those poor souls in mind, we offer a holiday week homework assignment for kids in grades six through eight: get yourself published in a real book.

The Jacksonville-based Books by Kids Foundation is publishing Tampa Bay from A to Z, to be sold in bookstores across the region, in partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida’s Tampa Florida Blue center.

Kids are being asked to submit "an original story about the Tampa Bay area incorporating historical figures, landmarks, and characteristics beginning with each letter of the alphabet." The winners will get prizes like tickets to area museums and professional sporting events, and of course, gain the thrill and fame of being published. Net proceeds will be donated to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital and All Children’s Hospital.

The deadline for submissions is Dec. 17, and parents will need to register their kids and sign papers regarding copyright and such. For more information, here's the press release and application.
