SUMMER SCHOOL LUNCH:Lunch2 Though many parents depend on the National School Lunch Program from August through May, many don’t realize that the U.S. Agriculture Department also provides free school lunches during the summer at many area schools. The meals serve the many children in extended learning, voluntary prekindergarten and YMCA programs, but also are available to any child in the neighborhood surrounding the schools and recreation centers that provide the meals. FCAT PROPOSAL DRAWS FIRE: Education Commissioner Jeanine Blomberg said this week she'd like to suspend a key but unpopular component of the state's school grading forumla - a component crafted during the Bush years that penalizes schools when a majority of struggling students, often poor and minority, don't make learning gains. But the proposal, which goes before the Board of Education on Tuesday, has drawn criticism of key lawmakers. Read about it here.
