West Zephyrhills Elementary principal to retire

Emily Keene was on track to retire in December 2013. Instead, she'll call it a career at the end of this school year.

"I decided to go out a little bit early," said Keene, 65, who joined the Pasco County school system in 1982. "My grandchildren want me to come spend some time with them."

Keene has spent 14 years in Pasco as a teacher and another 16 years as an administrator, including the past 11 as West Zephyrhills Elementary principal. She has received kudos from district leaders for running a successful, A-rated school.

The West Zephyrhills Elementary principal's job is now advertised, with a Friday application deadline. The district also is looking for a Double Branch Elementary principal to replace Peggy Lewis, who was scheduled to retire this June, and also for a Gulf High assistant principal for IB to replace Gwen Gideon, who is moving away.
