What's in a commissioner?
The State Board of Education plans to set its job description for education commissioner tomorrow morning. Members have said they want someone who knows the issues, but they wouldn't necessarily limit themselves to an educator. Someone with political savvy, maybe even political clout, could do nicely, some reason. So far all they have in writing is this, essentially nothing. It will be the board's first real test on how it deals with appointing the person who, until Jeb Bush put John Winn in place, was elected by the people of Florida. Names that have floated about so far have included superintendents, a mayor and a couple of lawmakers. What qualities do you think the commissioner of education should have? Have anyone particular in mind? Who knows. Maybe some board members will read your comments in the Gradebook before going to their meeting. Give us your best advice.
