What's your bias?
Let research benefit while you waste a little time today at work. Click here to link to Project Implicit, an project administered out of Harvard University. It'll take about 15 minutes to complete an online test that aims to evaluate your implicit biases and stereotypes. Warning: You may not agree with the results.
The survey sparked a heated discussion recently among a group of Title I teachers in Hillsborough County, who were directed to take the survey before attending a cultural competency training. The results were surprising. The group as a whole showed a strong to moderate preference for European Americans, but some minority teachers were shocked and angered to be told they shared them. Needless to say, you can take the results for what you think they are -- or are not -- work.
The idea is that you have to be aware of your internal biases to address them. That's particularly true of teachers, who often work with students who come from different cultural backgrounds than their own.
