Where was Commissioner Smith?
Some of the biggest Senate Bill 6 backers talked up the bill's positive points during a noon news conference in Tallahassee. One of the marquee names -- education commissioner Eric J. Smith -- was notably absent.
While on his way to the event, "he was called to a meeting with the Governor's Office to provide information about the bill," DOE spokesman Tom Butler told the Gradebook. "He definitely had planned to attend. I don't think it could be any more clear how supportive of the bill he is."
Gov. Charlie Crist has been consulting all sorts of people, from family members to classroom teachers to the education commissioner while trying to decide whether to veto the bill.
"When we've been getting questions, if (Smith) can respond to them and provide answers, that's what he does," Butler said.
