Who needs new schools?

Kids4_3 Money's tight. Building new schools costs. Are there other options?

The Florida Senate is having a confab on virtual schools on Thursday and Friday to talk about options that might keep some kids out of the actual school buildings. (See the agenda here, page 14.)

Florida Tax Watch has issued a report suggesting that's not such a bad idea.

The organization calls Florida Virtual School a "credible alternative to traditional schooling" in both student academic outcomes and cost effectiveness: "FLVS students outperformed their statewide counterparts on two independent assessments, both the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test and Advanced Placement examinations. They earned higher grades in parallel courses. And this was accomplished with less money than was typically spent for instruction in traditional schools."

During the workshop, senators are scheduled to discuss, among other things, "The Future of Virtual Education in Florida - Questions and Answers on Expansion Issues, Funding Issues, Accountability Systems." Can't wait to see what they conclude.
