Who needs vals and sals, anyway?
This time around, the concern arises in Palm Beach County, where a high school senior who thought she was going to be salutatorian of her class ended up not getting that position. Confusion over policy at the school got everyone, well, confused, as the Palm Beach Post reports.
So now a Palm Beach board member is recommending that the district do away with the valedictorian and salutatorian positions, and instead simply recognize the top 5 percent. Palm Beach superintendent Art Johnson proposed something similar two years ago, arguing the competition for the top slots had become to intense.
In the past few days, we've seen how emotional people become over high school graduation. Protests over who can give speeches in Santa Rosa, who can walk in Pasco and so forth have grabbed the headlines. Then people turn around and say, it's an important day, but just one milestone with many more to come.
So we put it to you -- what's the big deal about high school graduation, anyway? And, who needs vals and sals?
